The first french page dedicated to the ambigrams. The texts between quotes are written by Douglas R. HOFSTADTER

The first french book about the ambigrams is published at Editions Ecritextes (cf catalogue).
This the Burkard Polster's book, "l'art de symétriser les mots". Price 13€

Scan and put on this web page by . This François ALMALEH's ambigram was created by the first and unique generating website ambigrams of the world: WordNet: AMBIGRAM.MATIC.COM. Before reading the continuation, look at my first name created by Punya Mishra and turn over the screen (!)..... .

Lastly, I found around 360 ambigrams here from Internet. This website has not a commercial goal, so, sorry for the copyright, and thanks to the artists.

The ambigrams are words written in a C-W communication such as the writing can be read in ten structural symmetries (mirror, with 90...)!

Ambigrams (ambi = possible multiplicities of interpretations; gram = written specimen), neologism created by Hofstadter, comes from an idea to write the names in an ambiguous way, by making so that one can read them each of two different ways or better, in two different directions ".

" It is necessary to deform all the letters up to a certain point, while drawing started from their intrinsic properties from symmetry

Vertical symmetry:

" One can write in capital letters or in small letters in manuscript or types "

Ambigram by reflexion:

Ambigram by rotation (Franck Gray...):

Ambigram by shift (David Levitt):

" These ambigrams by shift is most difficult to realize. How did I make this ambigram? Initially, while starting by writing the name in capital of printing works, then while turning over it in order to explore the possibilities of them. I then discovered that to proceed by rotation would be very difficult and that had to be invented other thing. Inspired by the symmetry of letter v in the center of the word David, I thus studied the possibility of operating a reflexion in which this word would be read in the two directions. What then jumped me to the eyes, it is that there are VI in common in Levitt and David.... " " I distinguish 4 rules to be respected: " 1. Not to make fuzzy the physical borders between the letters, i.e. to very clearly mark the place where a letter finishes and that where another starts. 2. Not to cross the conceptual borders of the letter, which means that it is advisable to remain well in extreme cases-inside of the space finished by the Platonic form 3. impossible to follow: not to mix the capital letters and the tiny ones, very important aesthetic principle in my eyes 4. Not to mix the styles, i.e., for example, not to write a letter of round appearance or curve when the neighbor is, it, of square form
" (ambigrammes with 90 ) the word Chopin is read horizontally; when it is turned, it is read vertically: N changes into C, I out of H... The word carol writes in small letters becomes, when it is turned, CAROL, in capital letters ".

Lastly, a beautiful example to finish, more graph and of style. On the basis of name Josh Bell. The English term Bell meaning bell I drew the point on the J like a small bell, and the interpretation ll which appears when the whole is turned over: there is no fight between the reversed letter and the letter in the correct direction.

One of large of the inversion and the ambigram is Scott Kim with animated ambigrams! Remarkable site to be visited : Scott Kim

And then Stefan Gustavson has created a series with the names of his daily life (teacher, woman...), proving that one can create all (or almost) ambigrams. The last and beautiful example:

Lastly, two EXCELLENT links towards a creator of ambigrams : Gef's ambigram Gallery and Robert's Website
